Merton Partnership Civic Pride - Celebrating Volunteer Excellence
On Friday, 7th June, Merton came together to honour its unsung heroes at the Merton Volunteer Awards 2024. This annual event, now in its 9th year, celebrates the dedication, passion, and selflessness of over 500 volunteers nominated for their outstanding contributions to our community.
An independent panel meticulously reviewed each nomination, selecting winners and runners-up across 10 categories. The awards were presented by His Worshipful The Mayor of Merton, Councillor Slawek Szczepanski, with all nominees receiving certificates of appreciation.
Recognising volunteers is crucial as they embody the spirit of compassion and unity that strengthens our community. Their efforts make Merton a better place to live and thrive, showcasing the profound impact of selfless service on our collective well-being.

Volunteer Manager of the Year
In recognition of individuals who manage or co-ordinate cohorts of volunteers and in their role have made an outstanding contribution to standards of volunteering. A volunteer manager who shows commitment to best practice in supporting volunteers, including volunteer involvement, recruitment, induction, training, personal development, rewards and recognition.
The winner of the award this year was Zara Harris of Wimbledon Guild!
Zara has revolutionised the volunteer program at Wimbledon Guild, streamlining the recruitment and retention of over 200 volunteers. She's become a sought-after advisor in the Merton voluntary sector for her expertise in volunteer management and engagement.
Employee Volunteer of the Year
This award recognises a business, public authority, or organisation that has donated employee time to benefit Merton’s communities. It can be given to an individual employee or a team/cohort of employee volunteers.
This year's winner is Charlie Beatt!
Charlie has led the London Fire Brigade Boxing Club, a 10-week program focused on coaching, positive role modelling, and regular exercise. His dedication has been instrumental in the successful completion of the first cohort; marking a significant milestone in their mission to support disadvantaged young people in the local community.

Volunteer Team of the Year
This award recognises a team of 3 or more people who have taken action to make a difference to their local community, environment, and/or the lives of residents in the London Borough of Merton.
This year's winners are Merton Citizens!
Since 2018, Merton Citizens have been working with 15 local organisations to drive positive change in Merton. They've championed housing, mental health, refugee support, and the Living Wage, fostering initiatives like empathy training, mental health support hubs and refugee resettlement.

Young Volunteer Team of the Year
This award recognises a team of three or more young people (under 18) who have taken action to make a difference to the environment and/or lives of residents in the London Borough of Merton.
This year's winners are four dedicated young women from Mitcham Library!
They run the Craft Club with unwavering commitment and creativity, engaging children every Monday afternoon and during school holidays. Their proactive approach and fantastic support have made a significant impact upon both local young people and the library team.

Environmental Volunteer of the Year
This award recognises local individuals or teams who volunteer to enhance and/or protect our local environment, whether involved in Friends of Parks/open spaces or those who monitor local air quality or campaign around climate change.
This year's winners are the Friends of Cannizaro Park!
In the past year, this dedicated team has spearheaded remarkable transformations in Cannizaro Park. From securing prestigious awards to addressing drainage issues and fostering community engagement, their tireless efforts have revitalised this cherished landscape. With the support of 60 passionate volunteers, they continue to enhance Cannizaro Park's natural beauty and heritage for the benefit of Merton.

Young Sports Volunteer of the Year
This award recognises a young (under 18) Sports Club volunteer, coach, club secretary, linesman, referee, physio, first aider, tuckshop coordinator, etc., who has shown commitment to ensuring Merton residents can participate in high-quality sporting activities.
This year's winner is Ibraheem Chaudhry from the Morden Little League!
Ibraheem's journey at Morden Little League, from Assistant to Full Team Manager for the Under 8s boys section, demonstrates his remarkable dedication and leadership, earning respect from both adult and young players alike. His academic prowess and numerous accolades, including the DoE Gold and Jack Petchey awards, highlight his exceptional contributions and role modelling.

Cllr Maxi Martin Young Volunteer of the Year Award
This award is given to an exemplary young volunteer who shows dedication and commitment, often overcoming personal adversity, going the extra mile to support local charitable work and the community.
This year's winner is Tara Bhatia!
Tara has been an integral part of the board games club at Wimbledon Library for over two years, starting as a summer reading volunteer. Her dedication and reliability shine through as she sets up and facilitates the club every Saturday, bringing unmatched enthusiasm and charm, despite her own personal challenges. Tara embodies the spirit of volunteerism and community support, making a significant impact with her positive attitude and commitment.

Paul Smithers Sports Volunteer of the Year
This award recognises a volunteer sports coach who dedicates their time to ensuring that Merton residents can enjoy the benefits of sport and physical activity, helping them feel more motivated, confident, and healthy.
This award is named in honour of Paul Smithers, the Youth & Community Manager at Fulham FC Community Foundation, who dedicated many years to supporting local Merton young people through the KICK programme. His sudden passing in 2022 was a profound loss to the community.
This year's winner is Shaun Connelly from Morden Little League!
Shaun's 18 years of service at Morden Little League have been extraordinary. Holding various roles, including Welfare Officer, team manager, and League Secretary, Shaun's tireless efforts, especially during the COVID lockdown, elevated the league to new heights. As he retires, his calm demeanour and organisational prowess will be greatly missed; leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
Chris Frost Volunteer of the Year Award
This award is given to an exemplary volunteer who shows dedication and commitment, often overcoming personal adversity and going the extra mile to support local charitable work and the community. It is named in honour of Chris Frost, a charismatic leader who championed voluntary action and community partnership for over 30 years as CEO of Merton Voluntary Service Council (now Merton Connected).
This year's winner is Terry Dalchow!
Terry’s selflessness and compassion shine through in his volunteering for Merton Vision. He supports for at least three clients with tasks like shopping, DIY, gardening, and reading correspondence; all while caring for his mother. His dedication, including volunteering six hours a day for four weeks during Christmas, highlights his exceptional empathy and commitment to the community.

The Eric Leppard Lifetime Achievement Award
This award recognises individuals who have dedicated a significant number of years to volunteering with one or more organisations. It is named in honour of Eric Leppard, who spent the last 25 years of his life volunteering with several local organisations, including Deen City Farm, Wimbledon Magistrates Court, Homestart Merton, and Merton Home Visits Library Service.
This year's winners are:
CHRIS GRAY
Chris, an octogenarian volunteer, has dedicated over 30 years to the Merton community and 20 years at NEMCA. She consistently exceeds expectations by helping with events, offering support, cooking meals for seniors, and stepping in whenever needed. Her unwavering commitment makes NEMCA a welcoming hub of support for North East Mitcham.
GILLIAN THICK
Since 1978, Gillian has been a driving force behind the Christian CARE Association in Wimbledon. As head of Religious Studies at Wimbledon High School, she inspired her students to support the charity. Taking leadership in 2010, she expanded its reach to address the needs of families during the cost of living crisis, showcasing her dedication and empathy.
JAMES SMITH
James has volunteered as a coach at Morden Little League for over 18 years. Known for his reliability, positive attitude, and fairness, he ensures all players get equal game time and makes training and games enjoyable for everyone.
JEANETTE LUFFMAN
For over 30 years, Jeanette has held numerous roles at Morden Little League and currently serves as League Chairperson, Kit Coordinator, and Under 13s Boys Coordinator. Her tireless dedication ensures free football opportunities for all, making her a fixture at the league every Saturday.
JOANNE DALEY
Despite health challenges and personal hardships, Joanne has led grassroots efforts to empower the local community through feeding programs and mental health support. Her dedication and encouragement have made a significant impact through WAM Global.
JOY & LOUISA ROBINSON
Identical twins Joy and Louisa run weekly dance classes at NEMCA, going above and beyond to support their students with extra practice sessions and community engagement events. Their dedication and infectious enthusiasm inspire all who participate.
MARIO ROMANI
Mario, a dedicated coach at Nippon Judo Club, ensures children in Merton have access to daily Judo classes, promoting exercise, routine, and discipline. His commitment extends beyond coaching, as he subsidises the club's activities through his day job as a cab driver.
MARY BRODRICK
Mary has dedicated over 40 years to volunteering in various community roles, including social work and legal justice. She uses her CELTA qualification to assist individuals from diverse backgrounds to integrate into the UK through Learn English Together in Merton.
MICK TAYLOR
Mick has volunteered as a photographer and curator for over 25 years, contributing his skills to document events and preserve Merton's heritage. His work with Merton Heritage Service and the Wandle Industrial Museum has been invaluable in showcasing the borough's history.
ROGER STEELE
Roger has spent over 20 years raising awareness and organising educational events at Wandle Industrial Museum. His efforts extend to coordinating events for Merton Neighbourhood Watch, fostering a safer and stronger community across the borough.
