Lower Morden Lane - 'London's most Christmassy Street' in support of St Raphael's
As the festive season arrives, so does the brilliant community of Lower Morden Lane, with thousands of Christmas lights in tow. An annual tradition that has taken place throughout the month of December for decades, these wonderful residents transform Lower Morden Lane into ‘London’s most Christmassy street.’
For us, the brightest light shines on the local community, who run this event in support of our charity. The late Sylvia Queensborough, a
much-loved Hospice supporter, created Lower Morden Lane Lights more than 25 years ago, in aid of St Raphael’s. Sylvia sadly passed away last year, with our Hospice having the great privilege of supporting her in her final days.
The torch has been passed to David Clarke who continues to organise the event. David shares:
“St Raphael’s is a cause that resonates at this time of year. It is remarkable what respect the Hospice has around here. The atmosphere is brilliant, with thousands of people walking up and down the lane talking to each other, which doesn’t happen very often in London.”
David adds: “As well as fundraising, the Christmas lights have helped to build a sense of community on the street. It’s a fantastic spirit that you won’t find anywhere else.”
This year, mince pies and refreshments will be available to purchase on selected days, for visitors to enjoy while marvelling the lights. The mince pies are kindly being donated by Blue Diamond Lower Morden Garden Centre.
This special event has raised more than £200,000 for our charity, helping us continue to provide free specialist care to the people of Merton and Sutton and the support of their loved ones.
