After more than three years of fundraising, planning and dedication, the Hadley Road Allotment Hub in Mitcham was officially opened by the MP for Mitcham and Morden, Dame Siobhain McDonagh, and the Mayor of Merton, Cllr Shuile Syeda, on Saturday 14th June 2026.
The occasion was far more than the opening of a new community facility. It was a celebration of what can be achieved when local people come together with a shared vision and a determination to make a lasting difference. More than 500 residents attended the event, reflecting the pride, enthusiasm and sense of ownership that the community has invested in the project.
The day recognised the outstanding commitment of the many volunteers whose time, energy and perseverance have transformed the site into a vibrant community asset. Particular thanks were extended to local Ward Councillor Joan Henry, whose tenacity and steadfast support have played a vital role in helping to bring the project to fruition.
Blessed with glorious sunshine, the event became a wonderful celebration of community life. Residents of all ages and backgrounds came together to share home-grown produce, exchange stories, enjoy laughter and make new friendships. It was a powerful reminder that thriving communities are built not simply through bricks and mortar, but through kindness, collaboration and people supporting one another.
The Hadley Road Allotment Hub now stands as a lasting example of the strength of collective effort, a place where people can grow not only fruit, vegetables and flowers, but also friendships, wellbeing and a stronger sense of belonging. It is a testament to what is possible when a community works together, nurtures one another and shares a common purpose.
